The 11-day international theatre festival titled ‘BotTala Ranga Mela 2019’ is set to begin today on the premises of the Liberation War Museum in the capital’s Agargaon area.
Organised by BotTala--a performance space, the third edition of the international theatre festival will be honouring eight theatre activists from eight divisions, who have been working vigorously to promote theatre in the country, on different days during the festival. The honour recipients of this year’s festival are– Khan Delwar Hossain from Barisal, Hemendra Chowdhury from Sylhet, Haripada Sutradhar from Dhaka, Sabita Sengupta from Rangpur, Gaurango Aditya from Mymensingh, Milan Chowdhury from Chottogram, Anita Maitra from Rajshahi and Rohani Begum Mary from Khulna.
Noted theatre personality Ataur Rahman will inaugurate the festival, while state minister for cultural affairs KM Khalid will attend the opening ceremony as the chief guest. Three young playwrights Sadhona Ahmed, Ruma Modak and Shubhashish Sinha will be present as special guests.
Veteran playwright, director and actor Mamunur Rashid will be bestowed with the lifetime achievement award at the closing ceremony of the festival on November 26.
This year, two theatre troupes from Bangladesh, including host troupe BotTala, and eight troupes from abroad will stage their plays every day at 7:30pm during the festival. Along with Bangladesh, the participating countries in the festival are India, Spain, Iran and Nepal.
Today, on the first day of the festival, theatre troupe BotTala will stage its ninth production ‘Crutcher Colonel’.
‘BotTala Ranga Mela 2019’ will present notable plays like ‘Amar Mukher Anchalkhani’ (India), ‘Dilemmas Witch My Flamenco Tail Coat’ (Spain), ‘Mysterious Gift’ (Iran), ‘4.48 Psychosis’ (Nepal), ‘Biswa Mangal’ (India), ‘Macbeth’ (Bangladesh), ‘Shluk’ (India), ‘Blackhole’ (India), ‘Acharya Profulla Chandra’ (India) and ‘Khona’ (Bangladesh).
Alongside staging plays, the festival will also feature screenings of documentary, discussion, song, dance, recitation and children plays.
