Foreign Minister Momen tells Dhaka Global Dialogue

Foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has said that Bangladesh is hopeful about resolving the Rohingya crisis through dialogue and discussion, but regional leaders should also think about the matter as it may destabilise peace and development. “We have difficulty with Myanmar on the Rohingya issue. Over 1.1 million Rohingya people have been staying here for more than two years. We want to resolve the crisis through dialogue and discussion. We are working hard. Hopefully we will achieve it,” he said.

While addressing the concluding session of the three-day "Dhaka Global Dialogue 2019" yesterday (Wednesday), Momen said: “All countries, particularly community leaders, intellectuals and opinion leaders, should be conscious about such issues. It can destabilise peace and stability in the region. Governments of different countries could take action that may create some sort of disruption or ill-feeling. We have to be careful about it.”

"Dhaka Global Dialogue" was jointly organised by the Bangladesh Institute of International Strategic Studies (BIISS) and the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) at a city hotel. Among the panel discussants, state minister for foreign affairs Md Shahriar Alam and ORF chairman Sunjoy Joshi were present on the occasion. A member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nahim Razzaq, moderated the discussion. Stressing that peace and stability were imperative for sustainable development, Abdul Momen said: “We want peace and stability not only in our own country, but across the region. If there is any unrest in some part of the world, it affects all. If we ignore peace and stability, no development will be possible. We need a mindset of respect for each other. Violence erupts because of hatred and ignorance.” He spoke about mutual cooperation through partnership for achieving sustainable development goals.

“We should have very good relations with our neighbours. Our cardinal principle is friendship with all and malice towards none. In this region we are all friends. We can help each other through partnership to achieve our goals,” he added. The minister also emphasised on working together for creating a mindset of respect for each other irrespective of race, ethnicity, colour, or background.
