The High Court (HC) yesterday directed former Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka’s son Ishraque Hossain and daughter Sarika Sadeque to surrender before the chief metropolitan magistrate’s court in Dhaka within four weeks in connection with two separate corruption cases.
Earlier, on Wednesday, Ishraque, a BNP candidate for the 11th national election, and Sarika appeared before the HC seeking anticipatory bail in the cases filed against them for not submitting wealth statements before the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The HC bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam came up with the order after rejecting their bail pleas.
The HC also directed the lower court concerned to dispose of their pleas in accordance with the law, provided they appear before the court seeking bail in the cases.
Barrister Ajmalul Hossain QC appeared for the petitioners, while advocate Khurshid Alam Khan appeared for the ACC.
Deputy attorney general M Amin Uddin represented the state.
Deputy attorney general AKM Amin Uddin Manik told reporters that the HC also had refused to pass any order on their pleas seeking direction upon the police not to harass or arrest Ishraque and Sarika in connection with the cases.
In 2008, the ACC had served notices on Ishraque and Sarika, asking them to submit details, including the names of dependents, sources of income and other information of their wealth in seven days. As they had failed to comply with the notices, the ACC deputy director, Md Shamsul Alam, filed the cases against the siblings with Ramna Police Station in 2010 for not submitting statements regarding wealth.
Ishraque and Sarika had filed petitions seeking bail in advance about eight years later.
Ishraque received the BNP nomination for the Dhaka-6 seat after being selected as the BNP candidate for the constituency for the December 30 election.
It may be mentioned that the Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced former Dhaka City Corporation mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka and three others to 10 years’ imprisonment in absentia in a graft case.
