Biplu Ahmed, the local hero of Sylhet and the midfielder of the Bangladesh national football team, no longer dreams about going to London but is now dedicating himself to the cause of national football.

Biplu began his national team career in the Under-19 national side in 2015 but always dreamt of going to London to live a better life with his two brothers. But he changed his mind as time passed.

The young man of 20 is greatly admired by the people of the country for playing for the nation. This moved him emotionally and firmed up his commitment to play for his country.

Biplu Ahmed feels proud to contribute to the team’s success, as he did on Monday, scoring the most valuable goal for Bangladesh against Laos in the ongoing Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football tournament in Sylhet.

By virtue of Biplu Ahmed’s goal against Laos, Bangladesh are strongly in the race to move into the semi-finals.

“It is a great feeling when I score a goal or can help to win a match for the country. It’s my home ground, so it’s something more for me,” said Biplu, when talking to this correspondent yesterday at the team’s hotel lobby.

Biplu explained how and why he declined his brothers’ offer to go to London to lead a better life. “Once I dreamt of going to London. It is story of about three years ago, when I was already playing for the age-group national side, that my brothers told me to join them in London.

“But an incident just changed my mind. When an officer at the passport office honoured me as national team player by get my passport done quickly, I decided that I must do something for my country and declined the offer of going to London.”

“The first time I got an opportunity to play for the national (main) side in Laos in a FIFA friendly match, where we were trailing by 0-2 goals and finally finished on 2-2, when one of two goals resulted from my pass.

“After that I did not look back and concentrated on my game and became a regular member of the national squad,” Biplu recalled. Bipul, who is committed and disciplined, said, “When I came to Sylhet to play in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup tournament last week, my friends gave me a reception with a motorcycle rally, but I did not allow any of my friends at the team hotel or any other place, as I want to concentration on my game.

“Now, I only focus on improving my game to contribute to my country’s success. My father and mother were very happy when they watched my game. My mother couldn’t control her tears, all that made me a patriot, wiping out the dream of living in London,” Biplu said about his new dream of contributing to the country’s football.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh team did not have any practice session yesterday but had some gyms, swimming and stressing in the hotel.
