A mobile app will be launched at the 23rd annual Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF), which will begin from 1 January 2018. The app will help visitors locate the stalls at the fair. The deputy director (finance) of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Mohammad Abdur Rouf, told The Independent that this app will help visitors navigate through the fair. Upon installing the app, people will first get a bird’s-eye view of the stalls, he said.

The Ministry of Commerce and the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) are jointly organising the fair at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the fair.

Rouf told The Independent, “We expect to get export orders worth Tk 150 crore in 2018. This figure was only Tk 143 crore in 2017.”

In addition to the app, a touch-board named the Digital Experience Centre (DIC) will be inaugurated at the fair. Its purpose is to portray a digital map of the fair and to help visitors find the stalls and their products, Rouf explained.

The member-secretary of DITF, Avijit Chowdhury, told The Independent that out of 590 stalls and pavilions, 43 will belong to foreign countries. India, Pakistan, Thailand, Nepal, the UK, the US, Singapore, and many other countries are participating in the fair. Besides, delegates from Saudi Arabia, Nepal, and Japan will visit the fair, Chowdhury said.

Local companies like Nadia Furniture, RFL, and Akij will participate in DITF, said the organizers. Walton, a local electronic and home appliance manufacturing brand, will set up a beautifully decorated pavilion with many different types of products.

Shafiqul Alam, who is in charge of the Walton pavilion, said the brand will offer products like laptops, mobile phones, and eco-friendly LED lights at the fair. Walton will introduce a mobile phone named ‘Made in Bangladesh’. It costs a mere Tk 3500, Alam said.

This year, DITF will also have a theme park. Different species of fish and colourful birds will be displayed there, said the organizers.

A series of paintings titled ‘Khoka Theke Bangabandhu’ will be exhibited at the Bangabandhu pavilion, showing the early life of the Father of the Nation, said Rouf. The EPB also plans to showcase the history and heritage of the country at the fair.

The organizers added that a cultural programme will be held on the fairground every Thursday.

EPB sources said the authorities have already written to the law enforcement agencies, asking them to ensure tight security by setting up CCTV cameras and deploying multi-tier security, including the Ansar and Village Defence Party members, the Bangladesh Police, and the Rapid Action Battalion.

Already, 95 per cent of the stalls have been allotted. The remaining will be allocated in a few days.

On December 1, 1995, DITF began its journey of showcasing exort-quality goods produced in Bangladesh. Since then, the number of visitors to the fair has grown exponentially.

The fair will be open to the public from 10 am to 10 pm every day.
