DU, BUET students clash

DU Correspondent

Palashi area near BUET turned into a battlefield after students of BUET and Dhaka University’s Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall locked horns last night. Five BUET students were injured, one of them in critical condition, during the incident. Sources said a BUET student was beaten by the Asif Talukdar group of Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall on Thursday night over a trivial issue. Talukdar is the secretary of Zahurul Haque Hall unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). In retaliation, a group of BUET students allegedly kept detained Imran, a student of the Zahurul Haque hall, inside the BUET premises last evening.

Hearing the news, a group of 60-70 students from the Zahurul Haque hall, including several BCL men, armed with sticks, cricket bats, stumps and iron bars, entered Titumir and Ahsanullah hall of BUET and went to its Shaheed Minar area and started beating BUET students indiscriminately around 6:30 with.

Five BUET students-- Sourav, Abu Abdullah, Sadman, Divya Mandal and Anik -- were hurt at that time. Of them, Sadman of Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department was being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Being attacked, students, including the members of BUET unit BCL, took to the streets and a clash ensued that lasted from 7pm to 10:30pm. During the clash, traffic on surrounding roads was suspended.

BUET unit BCL president Shuvrojyoti Thikadar said he could not verify whether the claim of Zahurul Haque Hall students was true. However, BUET students took to the streets after being attacked by the DU students, he added.

Later, police force from Chak Bazar and Shahbagh police stations, proctorial body members from both the universities, and presidents of BUET and DU BCL units went to the spot and brought the situation under control.

While filing this report around 11:45pm, the area was being patrolled by the law enforces. No official comment was available on part of the authorities of any of the universities or the police.
