Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has told her cabinet colleagues that there is information that terror groups are planning major attacks across the country next month, a minister told this correspondent after a Cabinet meeting.
“You (ministers) must be vigilant and move about carefully in August as terror groups are trying to destabilise the country through attacks,” she told ministers at the Cabinet meeting held at the Secretariat yesterday.
“You must be alert and watchful as terror groups may not implement their sinister design in just one month,” she was quoted as having said.
The Prime Minister also asked her colleagues to raise awareness among employees of ministries and leaders and activists of their respective areas to avert any untoward incident.
Asking the works minister, engineer Mosharraf Hossain, to complete the eviction drive in residential areas like Gulshan, Uttara, Banani and Dhanmondi and remove unauthorised commercial structures, the Prime Minister said: “Please meet owners of the unauthorised structures in these areas and remove them as soon as possible. The government will not accept that someone sets up establishments without permission and creates security hazards.”
Sources in the home ministry and police said law enforcement agencies have already beefed up security for VIPs like ministers, secretaries and senior officials.

On July 18, the DMP commissioner, Asaduzzaman Mia, sent an SMS to some ministers asking them to be alert and move about carefully as terror groups may launch attacks on Cabinet ministers anytime. After receiving the SMS, some ministers cancelled their tours outside Dhaka fearing militant strikes.

Talking to this correspondent, some senior ministers said they would not meet party activists at their residences and offices until their identities are confirmed by security officers.
The Prime Minister called upon all law enforcement agencies to be trained in the use of modern technologies to tackle any terror threat as the militants are changing the pattern of assault.
