Goods transport workers call off strike

UNB, Dhaka
Goods transport workers call off strike

Truck and Covered Van Owners-Workers Oikya Parishad that went on a 3-day strike on Tuesday to press home 15-point demand called off the programme following a fruitful meeting with the Home Minister on Wednesday.

President of Bangladesh Covered Van-Truck-Prime Mover Transport Owners Association Makbul Ahmed and President of Bangladesh Truck Driver Workers Federation Talukdar Mohammad Munir came up with the announcement after the meeting.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman sat with the workers leaders at the secretariat in the morning.

“We’ve sat with the minister and we’re happy. We’ve decided to withdraw the 72-hour strike,” said Munir.

“The Bangladesh Covered Van Truck-Prime Mover Transport Owners Association, Bangladesh Truck Driver Workers Federation have submitted their 15-point demand to us. We’ve listened to them and will take steps in this regard,” said the Minister.

The movement of all kinds of goods-laden vehicles, including that of prime movers (trailer), covered vans and trucks had remained suspended across the country since Tuesday morning due to the strike.

Withdrawal of increased tax on motor-vehicle owners, easing the process of getting licenses of the motor vehicle drivers, ending harassment in the name of fitness and test in renewing driving licenses, providing biometric smart card to the drivers and assistants to enter the ports and providing Tk 50 lakh from a state-owned fund as compensation for the families of those workers who lost lives in road accidents were among their15-point demand.
