Attack on Khilgaon Jubo League leader: 2 held

Detectives arrested two people from Cumilla on Friday for their suspected involvement in the attack on Khilgaon’s Jubo League leader Syful Islam.

Moniruzzaman Sumon and his accomplices allegedly attempted to kill Jubo League Ward No-2 unit general secretary Syful Islam on the road under Khilgaon flyover at around 6:30 pm on May 15.

Based on secret information, a team of DB police of DMP conducted a drive at Amratoli of Barura in Cumilla district at around 6:30 pm on Friday and arrested Moniruzzaman Sumon and Md Imon.

Based on information given by the two, the detectives also conducted another drive at Trimohoni in Khilgaon in the capital and recovered two pistols and three rounds of bullets.

Briefing reporters at the DMP media centre, Additional Commissioner (DB) Hafiz Akhtar said victims Saiful Islam, Kachi, Ripon and Sumon were childhood friends.

Saiful got the general secretary post of the ward-2 of Jubo League that angered Ripon and Sumon.

They then formed separate group to dominate in the area for carrying out various criminal activities including extortion. At one stage, Sumon group and Ripon group planned to kill Saiful, said Hafiz.

As part of this plan, 12 to 13 people including Ripon, Kachi, Sumon and Emon came to the spot and Ripon shot Saiful twice, leaving him injured.

Sumon fired one round of bullet and then all fled the scene, he said.

Nine people were accused in the case over the attempt to kill Syful. Among them, Manjurul Islam alias Kochi, Russell Talukder alias Chapati Russell, Ujjwal Talukder and Amir Hossain were arrested and sent to court, Hafiz Akhtar said.

The operation to arrest the fugitive Ripon and his associates is continuing.

A separate case has been registered against them under the Arms Act at Khilgaon Police Station as arms and ammunition were recovered from them, he said.
