Social movement must be built to prevent dengue: Atiqul

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam has said that it is possible to prevent the spread of Aedes mosquito, Dengue and Chikungunia by building a social movement.

"There is no substitute for a healthy environment for our wellbeing and to ensure a healthy environment, people from all walks of life need to be involved in the social movement for clean-up activities," he said that while speaking as the chief guest at an anti-Aedes mosquito, dengue and chikungunia campaign in Ashkona Haji Camp and Dakshinkhan area of the capital today, said a release.

      
Urging the city dwellers to keep an eye on their surroundings so that water does not accumulate in their homes or anywhere else for more than three days, Atiqul said that, "If Aedes larvae is found in any private, government or non-government building, necessary legal action including fine will be taken."
       
The Mayor also said that due to the sudden rise of Dengue fever cases in the city free testing for Dengue fever has been arranged for the city dwellers in 46 urban health centers of DNCC, so that people don't have to gather at hospitals for test amid the pandemic situation.
       
While replying to the queries of newsmen, he said, "DNCC is working on short, medium and long term plans to reduce water logging and control pollution in the city. Due to the improvement of drainage system, the city dwellers did not have to suffer from water logging problem even in the record amount of rain this time," said the release.

"The ECNEC has already approved a project worth about Tk 4.26 thousand crore for the construction and development of roads, infrastructure and drainage systems in 18 new wards of the extended metropolis," he said.
      
Later, the Mayor inspected the mosquito eradication campaign in Dakshin Khan area and in his presence the owner of a building under construction was fined Tk 5 lakh through a mobile court as Aedes mosquito larvae was identified in it.
       
Atiqul Islam then visited various areas including Dakshin Khan of DNCC No. 7 in an open truck equipped with various banners and festoons against Aedes mosquitoes, dengue and chikungunia to increase public awareness among the city dwellers.
       
Among others, Dhaka-18 MP Mohammad Habib Hasan, DNCC Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Mohammad Jobaidur Rahman and local councilors were present at that time.
