Ensure fair price of rawhides

It is unfortunate that the poor, the helpless and the destitute are being deprived of their due because rawhides are not sold at a fair price.

Ensure fair price of rawhides

Eid-ul-Azha has come. Bangladesh is a Muslim-majority country and every year millions of animals such as cows, goats, buffaloes and sheep are sacrificed in this country on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. According to the provisions of Islam, the rawhide of these sacrificial animals is due to the poor, orphans, helpless, destitute or religious institutions. But every year on this Eid, the rawhide continues to be manipulated. The price of hide suddenly goes down at this time. There are many reasons behind this manipulation.
The money of the hide of the sacrificial animal is the right of the poor. The poor and helpless people suffer for this manipulation of leather. On this day of the year, the eyes of many poor people are set on the skin of the sacrificial animal. Their rights are ruined because they do not get the fair price of the hide.
It is unfortunate that the poor, the helpless and the destitute are being deprived of their due because rawhides are not sold at a fair price. Sacrificial animal hides were not sold at air price for the last few years. Statistics show that 70 per cent of the total animal skins collected in the country every year is collected during Eid-ul-Azha, but sadly, it is during this time that the traders' syndicate started manipulating the price of hide.

Despite knowing that the poor and the needy have a right to the hide of the sacrificial animal, the entrepreneurs of the leather industry, traders and some unscrupulous exporters have become desperate to pocket the rights of the poor. Before Eid, the rogue traders form a syndicate to cheat the poor and make their pockets heavier. Even though the government fixes the price of hide, these traders form syndicates and devise various schemes to buy hide at low prices. There is no initiative to break the traders' syndicate.

Since the hide of sacrificial animals could not be sold at a fair price, many people buried them in frustration or floated them in the river in the recent past. In many places, these hides were found rotting on the side of road, which causes an unbearable stench.

Although the 'leather syndicate' is blamed for the fall in leather prices, leather traders say there is a dirty game behind the fall in leather prices. In the rural areas, due to the lack of buyers, there is a problem with the skin of the sacrificial animals. If the situation remains the same this year, the foreign exchange earning in this sector will naturally decline. Moreover, a large number of helpless, poor, destitute and orphans of the country will be deprived of their just rights, which is not desirable.

That is why it is necessary to ensure a fair price of leather in advance so that such a bad situation does not arise in the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. It is not necessary to fix the price only for animal hide, now the demand is to ensure that fair price is paid. Otherwise, the helpless, the poor, the needy will be trapped by unscrupulous traders as they will not be able to sell the skins of the sacrificial animals or get a fair price like other times. This time people concerned have to start preparations in advance. Strict measures have to be taken to ensure a fair price for raw hides. Emphasis should be placed on collection, storage and stocking of leather at fixed prices. Leather syndicates need to be closely monitored.

For the benefits of marginal traders the government at the community level has taken up a project titled 'Archives'. Under this project, 600 archives will be constructed across the country. As a pilot project, four archives will be set up in four districts of the country known as leather hubs before Eid-ul-Adha. The implementation of the entire project will solve the decades-old crisis over raw hides in the country. The syndicate trade of all the traders will stop every time they stop buying hides on various pretexts. Leather traders and tannery owners have been blaming each other for the fall in hide prices and the inability to sell them.
All the syndicates involved in the leather business should be monitored. Special vigilance should be taken to stop extortion in transportation of sacrificial animals from different parts of the country.
