Promoting women entrepreneurship on social media

In the patriarchal society it is not easy for women to come out of their traditional cocoons to establish their individual identity. Still in most societies the day-long household works women perform are not considered as works, even these types of works have not been included in GDP contribution. But it is obvious that over the years women have entered the mainstream of workforce together with their male counterparts and proved their worth.
In the digital age not only women are joining outdoor workforce but also many of them are establishing their identity as small and medium entrepreneurs. Though the path of becoming entrepreneurs is not smooth for them, online platform, more importantly, Facebook-based platform has given women the scope to make some money besides carrying out their roles as homemakers.
By engaging themselves in entrepreneurship, especially small home grown business using social media platform they are contributing significantly to family wellbeing, poverty reduction and sustainable economic growth and it is obvious that the kingdom of women entrepreneurship has expanded over some recent years through Facebook platform, empowering not only the urban women but also the girls and women in the remote places in Bangladesh.
Over the years we have seen that in a bid to empower women community the government and national and international NGOs have been taking many initiatives. These initiatives usually include training on processing food items, rearing animals, sewing and many more skills based schemes so that women can establish their individual identity in the family and society.
But in the past women did not get much benefit running small businesses as it was difficult for them in many cases to establish smooth communication to reach their home-made products to the targeted population. However, these days they see their entrepreneurship more booming by shifting their business paradigm online.
It is amazing to see that almost a quarter of the world’s population is now on Facebook. In Bangladesh, according to statistics up to March 2020, the number of Facebook users reached to 22.2% of its entire population. According to the report in 2020, Bangladesh saw its position among 15 countries with the highest Facebook users. Truly, all of these people together constitute the single largest market in the country unlocking the potential of E-business. Thousands of women see this scope more comfortable which encourages them to jump into action and utilize the opportunity.
It is frequently noticed that in the socio context of our country, life and livelihoods of women are mostly confined by the decision of the male members in their family. These days in many cases parents have become aware enough to educate their daughters but as soon as they are married off and sent to others’ family, the decision whether they will have scopes to do jobs outside is determined by the bridegroom’s family. There may be some who can allow their brides to join outside workforce but in many cases they have to quit the job due to thinking over the pressure of maintaining kids and family.
It is true that every educated woman wants to have self-worth and contribute to her society and family in a meaningful way. In this connection, Facebook-based platform has been an ultimate model to solve this problem of thousands of women. It is apparent why most women feel attraction to start Facebook-based business is that it is the only platform offering excellent marketing opportunities for the business with minimum investment on ads. Again women do not face any hazards in operating their business on this platform and they do not have any concerns over their safety and comfort as they deal staying inside their house.
Apart from paid ads, the entrepreneurs see ample scopes to start their business online through a business page, customer shares and other media helps in promoting the business. Not only that, the entrepreneurs do not face any time restriction, even after performing their households they can operate this type of venture in their free time.
Again the clients see this platform easy to buy their desired products as all types of products are found selling online. Not only that, they have scopes to review the products and compare the price in the competitive online market. Besides, it is not time-consuming as we do shopping in the shopping malls.
In recent times, we see that the women entrepreneurs not only create page and site to run their online venture, more often they do publicity of their own products coming on air. In most cases, in regard to selling cosmetics and clothing they come to Facebook live and display their products to make the system of online business more effective. No doubt, a well-planed Facebook live is an excellent way to promoting any product along with making the users convinced about the services. We see that thousands of followers they produce and do their business with reputation.
Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, thousands of women have lost their jobs. The workers who would work in the beauty salon and fitness centres have borne the most brunt amid the prolonged shutdown of their business. However, they have started anew getting engaged online.
Businesses via Facebook have multiplied during the Covid-19 pandemic as more clients are interested to shopping online in order to save their time and be safe from Covid-19 contamination. But things are not always welcoming as sometimes, the clients may get deceived by some fraudulent pages on Facebook that are built as a replica of the popular seller pages.
However, to combat any inequalities against women it is very imperative to ensure their economic solvency. Obviously, women entrepreneurship on online platform can be the solution of their many existing hurdles they undergo in their life. More importantly, to promote these ventures there is hardly any alternatives to ensure loans and tax exemptions that not only will give them a strong platform for existence but also help the country to increase GDP growth.
