Mehidy optimistic about good performance in Sri Lanka

Bangladesh allrounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has said that they hope to deliver a good performance in the Sri Lanka series and are optimistic about a positive result this time for the Tigers.

Bangladesh national team are currently touring Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series which is part of the World Test Championship. It is the first overseas Test series for the Tigers in the pandemic.

After reaching Sri Lanka on April 12, the Bangladesh team maintained a three-day quarantine in the team hotel. They started training on Thursday.

“Whenever we came to Sri Lanka, we played well. We narrowly failed to lift the Nidahas Trophy. We ended the ODI series 1-1, and in the Test series, we also ended up winning a match,” Mehidy told the media in a video message from Sri Lanka on Friday.

“According to our performance in Sri Lanka during the last three-four years, I think we're not behind them. If we can stay firm and fight hard, I believe we’ll be able to bring a positive result this time,” he added.

Bangladesh played their 100th Test in Sri Lanka and came up victorious against the hosts, which was the Tigers’ first Test win in the island nation. Mehidy said it was an immense pleasure.

“Ahead of that match, we're so committed to doing something memorable as it was our 100th Test. We discussed in the team meeting that we've to win this game at any cost. We had a positive body language, we had an attitude to win the match giving our hundred percent effort,” Mehidy added.

According to him, the job of spinners is very important in Sri Lanka as the condition of this country is always friendly to the slow bowlers. He said that spinners will get much help from the wicket from the third or fourth day of the Tests.

Bangladesh are missing the service of their spin-bowling consultant, Daniel Vettori, in the Sri Lanka tour as the New Zealand legend is unable to travel from his country due to Covid-19 restriction. Bangladesh has appointed Sohel Islam as the spin coach for this tour.

“I've been working with Sohel since my early cricketing days. Not only me, but Taijul has been working with him for a long time as well. He knows us better than anyone else. I think his coaching will help us in the Sri Lanka series,” Mehidy added.

The two-match series will begin on April 21 at Kandy. Due to the Covid-19 restriction in the island nation, both the Tests will take place at the same venue.
