Bangladesh’s coronavirus fatalities surged past 10,000-mark on Thursday, nearly 13 months after the first death from the virus was reported.

With 94 deaths, two less than yesterday’s, the local death tally rose to 10,081. The mortality rate went up to 1.43 percent from 1.42 percent.

Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8 last year and the first death was announced 10 days later.

After registering more than 7,000 daily new coronavirus cases for the past few days, the number of infections fell significantly during the last several days.

Health authorities announced 4,192 new cases in a 24-hour period until the morning, according to a handout of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Bangladesh’s daily infection rate rose to 21 percent, up from 20.89 percent on Wednesday.

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases now stands at 707,362. So far, 591,299 patients (84.09 percent), including 5,333 in the last 24 hours, have recovered.

The virus claimed 568 lives in January this year, 281 in February and 638 in March.

Between April 1 and April 15, the country registered 1,035 deaths and 96,022 new cases.

On Wednesday, Bangladesh registered its highest number of deaths – 96 -- from the virus for the fourth time in five days.

The figure was 69 on Tuesday, 83 on Monday, 78 on Sunday and 77 on Saturday.

The number of daily cases was 5,185 on Wednesday when the country entered a strict week-long lockdown to contain the transmission of the virus.

Global situation

The overall number of global Covid cases has now surged past 138 million, an alarming figure that paints a perilous picture of the pandemic.

According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 138,056,297 while the death tally from the virus reached 2,971,539 Thursday morning.
