COVID-19 cases hastily cross 16,900 in Rangpur

The number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases hastily crossed the 16,900 mark in Rangpur division where the infection rate continues rising rapidly almost daily during the last four weeks.

Health officials said the number of COVID-19 cases speedily rose to 16,931 as 71 more patients were reported after testing 380 samples at the daily infection rate of 18.68 percent on Sunday in the division.

“The infection rate is showing a quickly rising trend amid a declining recovery rate now in the division,” Focal Person of COVID-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr ZA Siddiqui told BSS today.

The district-wise break up of total 16,931 patients stands at 4,327 in Rangpur, 815 in Panchagarh, 1,456 in Nilphamari, 1,005 in Lalmonirhat, 1,071 in Kurigram, 1,593 in Thakurgaon, 5,076 in Dinajpur and 1,588 in Gaibandha of the division.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, a total of 1,18,728 collected samples were tested in the division till Sunday, and of them, 16,931 were found COVID-19 positive with an average infection rate of over 14.26 percent.

Meanwhile, the total number of healed COVID-19 patients reached 15,848 with recovery of 37 more patients on Sunday at the average recovery rate of 93.60 percent in the division.

“The 15,848 recovered patients include 4,053 of Rangpur, 782 of Panchagarh, 1,367 of Nilphamari, 963 of Lalmonirhat, 1,012 of Kurigram, 1,493 of Thakurgaon, 4,717 of Dinajpur and 1,461 of Gaibandha districts in the division,” Dr Siddiqui added.

Talking to BSS, Divisional Director (Health) Dr Md Ahad Ali said the number of fatalities rose to 320 with one more death reported on Sunday from Rangpur in the division.

The district-wise break up of the 320 fatalities stands at 74 in Rangpur, 115 in Dinajpur, 34 in Thakurgaon, 32 in Nilphamari, 16 in Kurigram, 20 in Panchagarh, 18 in Gaibandha and 11 in Lalmonirhat districts of the division.

“The average casualty rate currently stands at 1.89 percent in the division,” he said.

Among the total 16,931 infected patients, 90 are undergoing treatments at isolation units, including 11 critical patients at ICU beds, after recovery of 15,848 patients and 320 deaths while 718 remaining in home isolation across the division.

Meanwhile, a total of registered 5,78,224 citizens, including 3,46,846 male and 2,31,378 female, got the first dose of the vaccines with inoculation of more 2,241 people on Sunday.

Of them, 38,509 citizens, including 28,241 male and 10,268 female, who got the first dose of the vaccines at least two months ago, were inoculated with the second dose till Sunday.

“The district-wise break-up of the second dose recipient 38,509 citizens stands at 7,174 in Rangpur, 5,150 in Panchagarh, 5,454 in Nilphamari, 1,799 Lalmonirhat, 3,509 Kurigram, 3,673 in Thakurgaon, 7,918 in Dinajpur and 3,832 in Gaibandha,” Dr Ali added.

Chief of Divisional Coronavirus Service and Prevention Task Force and Principal of Rangpur Medical College Professor Dr. AKM Nurunnobi Lyzu said it has become crucial for everyone to abide by the health directives to check the hastily rising infection rate.
