Bangladesh Studies Institute cherishes Bangabandhu’s dream

The institute of Bangladesh Studies (IBS) is the constituent institute of Rajshahi University which was established in 1974. Probably, it is the single-most research institute in the country established under an act of Bangladesh Parliament. Not only that, it is the oldest and largest research institute in the University of Rajshahi committed to developing the culture of quality research on various aspects of Bangladeshi society and culture.
Obviously, after the country being independent in 1971 Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started working to build up the country anew as throughout the nine months of bloody war the country underwent huge devastation.
The Pakistani Junta left no stone unturned to make ‘Sonar Bangla’ into a destitute land. Bangabandhu took many immediate initiatives to solve the engulfing crisis amid the country. On top of that, he emphasized on building a quality nation as our farsighted leader felt that only a quality nation is the best resource to change a country’s lot.
Amid many plans and initiatives Bangabandhu was very enthusiastic to establish educational institutes and research centres to make the nation intellectually advance as he could realize that education and research can show people the right path of development.
Usually, research on Bangladesh includes different aspects of life, society, culture, anthropology, geography, environment, law, language and literature and various other fields. To establish Bengali identity across the globe we find no alternative to study on Bangladesh.
Considering this and many activities in fostering research scopes and in enhancing extensive and in-depth research on various topics related to Bangladesh affairs, Bangabandhu established the institute of Bangladesh Studies. Since the very inception the IBS has been working relentlessly to produce quality researchers. It is a center for inter-disciplinary study and research which has been acclaimed far and wide in the arena of research and innovations.
Certainly, to cherish Bangabandhu at heart and to address the country to a global height, there is no alternative to conducting enormous studies on Banganbundhu and Bangladesh. Bangabandhu is the unending inspiration for this nation.
It is true that fostering quality education and quality research has been a challenge in the country. Materialistic attitudes are prevailing in all spheres of education where the individuals are more concentrated on considering education as commodity than enhancing their self-refinement. However, in these days, the number of MPhil and Ph.D. degree holders has increased as not only teachers of the universities, but also people of diverse professions are pursuing higher studies.
Contrarily, how far their achieved degrees are contributing to the society and the nation is still a debate. Academic corruption and manipulation in the academic arena are common to observe. Truly, none will deny the statement that education is the backbone of a nation. Can we imagine a strong backbone without quality education and research? Actually standard research is the gateway to ensure sustainable education for a country.
However, cherishing the dream of Banganbandhu to foster the quality research culture, the IBS is a unique institute who never compromises the quality. It offers M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees in different subjects of humanities, social sciences, business studies, law and non-experimental sciences. Scholars from diverse professions along with some scholars from overseas get enrolled through a competitive exam every year.
One thing is very important to mention that after getting enrolled at the IBS, a researcher irrespective of any discipline, must go through a rigorous course work on Bangladesh studies. Apart from subject knowledge the knowledge of multidisciplinary studies undoubtedly enriches a researcher to carry out his/ her research without any difficulties.
On top of that, the IBS in a bid to develop closer interaction among government resource personnel and university teachers and faculty members and fellows organizes national and international seminars, symposia, workshop, and lectures by outstanding scholars from home and abroad on different important contemporary issues of Bangladesh which is really noteworthy.
Also the IBS maintains a sound academic collaboration from national to global height and apart from offering fellowship to all fellows, it supports its faculty, affiliated researchers and students for higher studies abroad on the basis of their performance in course and/or research work.
To this end, it is no denial that IBS plays a crucial role in ensuring quality research and producing quality researchers. With all efforts it is cherishing the dream of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and contributing enormously to building the nation.

The writer teaches at Prime University& research fellow of the IBS.
