Tennis career, conjugal life blend beautifully

Five-time national champion Sonam Sultana Soma and former national table tennis player Mohammad Ali are now a happy couple and even now in the table tennis arena they are very much active with some credits.

Having tied their knot in 2004, the Soma-Ali couple have been carrying on their playing and coaching life simultaneously with acclaim.

Soma started to play table tennis from her teen age as early as 2000 and ultimately became the number one table tennis player of the country while her husband Mohammad Ali is the coach of the national side and the Bangladesh Ansar team.

Life of Soma and Ali have been running evenly as a player and as a coach for a long time and at the same time they are leading a happy conjugal life.

Soma proved her talent at the early stage of her playing career by winning numerous titles in the junior level national competitions and tipped off to be one of the country’s top table tennis players (female).

Soma and Ali shared the tales of turning into husband-wife from a teacher (coach)-student (player) relationship while playing table tennis with the Independent on Monday.

Soma hailing from the Narail District while stating the story of becoming a table tennis player said, “There was a club adjacent to our home where a lot of young used to play table tennis when I was of a tender age. I became very fond of this game, in fact, my cousin former national table tennis champion Saleha Begum inspired me to be a table tennis player. But I do say that my main inspiration was my mother. She is a passionate lover of sports and likes table tennis and encouraged me”.

“However, after being a Junior national champion, I became a of national runner up (senior) and ultimately won the national title for four times. Now I am ranking number 1 at the national level,” Soma replied to a query.

While talking about becoming life partner of her coach Mohammad Ali, three gold medalist (single, mixed double and team events) in the last edition of the Bangladesh Games Soma said, “Though it was not a long love story but tied the knot after few years of falling into love and solemnized the marriage with due rituals.”

Ali, did not have a bright playing career but he flourished in his coaching career as under his guidance (even as a captain) Bangladesh Ansar team celebrated the national title for 20 times.

Ali also explained about his affection for table tennis as he was brought up in Azimpur, where country’s table tennis legends Kochi and Rochi had their pick time.

“At my boyhood I saw country’s famous table tennis players Kochi Bhai and Rochi Bhai along with a bunch of youths playing table tennis near our house and I became fond of this game. Though at the junior level I was very much promising and I had so many trophies at that level but my career in the senior level was not very long, as I preferred to be a coach than playing. So ultimately I became coach.” Ali depicted how he became fond of the game.

While explaining how he fell in love, Ali said “Soma was playing (now also) under my coaching. I was fascinated to observe her talents, playing style and realized that once she would be the best in the country. To be honest, after some time, I really started to love her but could not propose directly but to share with one of her team-mates, who actually did the job as a matchmaker. Finally, I came to know that she also liked me but could not render her emotion, as I was her coach. Anyway, last of all with the consent of both of our families we got married in 2004 and she has been continuing her career as the number one ranking player and I am coaching Bangladesh national team and the Bangladesh Ansar team.”
