Shakib returns to Test side for WI series

Shakib returns to Test side for WI series

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan returns to Bangladesh Test team as he has been named in the 18-member squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against West Indies.

There was an injury cloud over Shakib, who had picked up a groin injury during the final ODI. Although the BCB physician remained optimistic about hisavailability for the Tests with scans not indicating any tear in the groin region, Shakib did not to join his team-mates for the practice sessions ahead of the Tests until Saturday (January 30).

"Shakib is desperate to play. We are confident that he will be available for the Test series. We are waiting to see how he feels after bowling tomorrow (Sunday) as he has just batted today,'' BCB's chief selector Minhajul Abedin told Cricbuzz. "It's Test cricket and that is why we are confident because he can have rest in between unlike in T20s or ODIs where you are playing with the same intensity.''

Bangladesh had earlier named a 20-member provisional Test squad, which had been practising since the conclusion of the ODI series while Shakib opted to rest. But he did take part in the session on Saturday, although he batted mostly against the spinners in the nets while the others were involved in match scenarios.

But his presence in the condensed squad is an indication that the 33-year-old has recovered sufficiently and is likely to play a role in the Tests. Nurul Hasan and Khaled Ahmed are the ones left out from the provisional squad named while Shadman Islam, who missed the Zimbabwe series, is also on the comeback trail.

The first Test is scheduled to begin on February 3 in Chattogram while the second Test will be played in Dhaka from February 11. This will be Bangladesh's first Test assignment since their innings victory against Zimbabwe at home in February 2020.

Squad: Mominul Haque (c), Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Najmul Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammed Mithun, Liton Das, Yasir Ali, Saif Hassan, Mustafizur Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Shadman Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Abu Zayed, Ebadat Hossain, Hasan Mahmud
