The results of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent exams of 2020 will be published on early Saturday.

The results will be officially announced at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka’s Segunbagicha at 10:30am.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will join the programme through video conference from Ganabhaban, said the education ministry.

The HSC results were evaluated based on the students’ Junior School Certificate (JSC), and Secondary School Certificate SSC results as no exam was held considering the Covid-19 situation.

The results will be published after coordinating 75 percent of the SSC and 25 percent from the JSC and Junior Dakhil Certificate (JDC) results, said Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni recently.

The cabinet earlier approved a draft bill for an amendment to the Intermediate and Secondary Education Ordinance 1961 allowing the education boards to publish results without holding exams amid any crisis.

Technical committee

In October, the education ministry formed a seven-member technical committee, headed by Nazmul Haque Khan, additional secretary of the ministry, for developing a method of evaluating the candidates based on their previous SSC and JSC results.

The HSC batch of 2020 will be the first batch of students who will get certificates without sitting for the exams as it is the first time in Bangladesh history that a public exam has been cancelled.

Educational institutions closure

The government has again extended the closure of educational institutions, except the Qawmi madrasas, until February 14 as there has been no significant improvement in the coronavirus situation in the country.

Education Minister Dipu Moni confirmed it in an official media release on Friday after consultation with others.

The government shut all the schools and educational institutions on March 17 last year after the country confirmed its first Covid-19 cases on March 8.

The closure was extended several times, most recently until January 30 this year to protect the students from the virus infections.

Coronavirus in Bangladesh

Health authorities in Bangladesh on Thursday confirmed 15 new coronavirus-related deaths and 509 new cases, raising the death toll to 8,087.

The Covid-19 infection rate in the country now stands at 3.43 percent, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in a handout. “The mortality rate is now 1.51 percent,” the DGHS said.

Meanwhile, the new cases pushed up the national tally to 533,953 while the current overall detection rate is 14.77 percent. Until this morning, 478,546 patients (89.62 percent of the total reported cases) have recovered.

Mass vaccination

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched a coronavirus vaccination drive at Kurmitola General Hospital in the capital on January 27.

Health Minister Zahid Maleque has said that 70 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccines are currently available in the country.

For getting a shot, one will have to register on www.surokkha.gov.bd, PMO Secretary Md Tofazzel Hossain Miah has said.
