Youngman, fearful of covid-19, leaves ailing aunt abandoned on road

An old woman was left abandoned on a road at the Agoiljhara bypass area in Barishal district allegedly by her nephew suspecting her to be a corona patient.

On information from local people, Agoiljhara police rescued the old woman Monday night and admitted her to Gournadi Upazila Health Complex.

A local shopkeeper of Agoiljhara upazila said a young man left her on the spot and fled the scene in the afternoon.

Later, the locals informed the matter to local journalists and they informed the police.

Afzal Hossain, Officer in Charge (OC) of Agoiljhara police station, said the sick old woman was identified as Dipu Bala, 60, hailing from Tarabari of Askar village under Bagdha Union Parishad in the upazila. Her husband died three years back and she was living with her nephews since then.
The old woman was suffering from fever and got admitted to Goila Hospital and was later shifted to Gournadi Upazila Health Complex.

Her nephew later left her abandoned on the roadside suspecting her to be suffering from the deadly coronavirus, police sources said.

“We rushed the sick old woman to hospital on humanitarian ground. We are looking for her nephew Mitul Saha, but his mobile phone was found switched off and legal action will be taken against him for leaving his aunt helpless on roadside.”

Police already arranged medical support and diet supply for her, OC Afzal Hossain of Agoiljhara police station said.

Pradeep Kumar Biswas, a member of Bagdha Union Parishad, said the old woman used to work as a domestic help at a Barishal city residence and later she was sent home along with her nephew Mitul Saha following her illness.

But Mitul Saha instead of taking her back home left her abandoned on the road, the UP member said.
