The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has taken a project of Tk 1,351 crore to modernise the Paturia-Daulatdia ferry terminals including construction of permanent bank protection to prevent terminals from river erosion.
Besides, it has already completed temporary protection works for ferry ghats and roads to prevent erosion in this rainy season.
The project will be implemented jointly by BIWTA and Bangladesh Water Development Board.
Two ferry ghats out of total six were fully eroded last year due to heavy current of the mighty River Padma at Daulatdia, which resulted in severe problems to ferry transports using the Paturia-Daulatdia terminals.
Later the authorities concerned had suggested the vehicle owners to use Bangabandhu Jamuna Bridge instead of Paturia-Daulatdiaferry terminals last year too.
The BIWTA officials told this while talking to The Independent on Thursday.
The authorities concerned wereforced to stop ferry services during the rainy season due to the strong current and erosion of the River Padma at Paturia-Daulatdia river crossing.
Considering the possible erosion in this season and last year's horrific demolition, the BIWTA authorities have started the development works from last March.
As part of the temporary protection works, it already dropped sandbags filled with sand to protect the ferry ghats from up to Daulatdia No. 1 ferry terminal to No. 8 ferry terminal.
Besides, the BIWTA has planned to drop the geo-bags on an emergency basis during erosion, sources said.
“We have already constructed bypass roads connecting ghats in Daulatdia Ferry Terminal. Besides, all the temporary works have already been completed to face any possible disaster in this rainy season to protect ferry terminals and its ghats from river erosion,” Nizam Uddin Pathan, executive engineer of BIWTA told this correspondent.
When asked regarding temporary works, he replied, “We have already taken a project of Tk 1,351 crore to modernize the Paturia and Daulatdia ferry terminals. New terminal buildings, roads, and ferry ghats will be constructed under the project permanently. The project will be implemented in this current fiscal year and project work is likely to begin in December next.”
The Bangladesh Water Development Board will construct permanent bank protection works in Paturia and Daulatdia ferry terminal areas at a cost of Tk 700 crore under the same project of Tk 1,351 crore, Pathan added.
According to Pathan, it would help protect the ghats and terminals permanently from river erosion once the project is implemented.
