Muhuri Dam Tourist Spot

A large number of tourists rush to the Muhuri dam in Feni every winter to enjoy the beauty of nature, particularly the rows of trees that are sanctuary to flocks of birds. Local sources say nearly 40 to 50 species of different birds have their habitat there. 

The artificial waterway of the Muhuri irrigation project, surrounded by dams on four sides, is a scenic spot near the estuary of the Bay of Bengal. The place has the country’s only duck breeding research centre, which supplies eggs and ducklings. There is also a centre for handmade sheep wool carpets nearby. Another attraction is the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. 
The Muhuri project is in Sonagazi upazila, 18 kilometres from Feni town. It has the country’s second biggest wind power plant water regulator, which was built in 1981. Later, following suggestion by the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation to turn the place into a tourist spot, the local administration established a good number of picnic areas in the surrounding lush greenery. There are also facilities for boat rides.  
In the winter season, many families, students and picnic parties visit the place everyday. But experts say the area has the potential to attract more visitors if the nearby beach is developed, and hotels, motels and other necessary infrastructures built. That would also bring in income for the locals.
“We hope Parjatan will ensure full facilities for visitors,” said Sonagazi upazila chairman ZAM Kamrul Anam. He also hoped that private investors will come forward to develop the area and turn it into a modern tourist attraction.
