Dhaka University Photographic Society

Dhaka University Photographic Society, or DUPS, was established in August 1999. According to their web page, dups-bd.org, DUPS started with a view to encourage the youth in the art of photography. Its goal was to develop the photographic skills of students through workshops, trainings and field trips. Since then, DUPS has been producing master photographers.
Initially, DUPS activity involved only students of Dhaka University. Later, as its fame spread widely, people came from different parts of the country to join the photography courses arranged by DUPS. In fact, it will hold a training on basic phototherapy on January 29 that anyone can attend.
DUPS has participated in many local and international exhibitions and photography contests, with members winning prizes. It has also organised exhibitions at Shilpakala Academy, and is very keen to host an international exhibition as well.
Membership in the society is open to all Dhaka University students, especially those in the 1st or 2nd year, having an interest in photography, regardless of skill level.  Even owning a camera is not required. The society currently has 28 members, with four  executives and committee members, including a president and vice president along with a general secretary, treasurer, organising secretary and press secretary.
A weekly meeting is held every Thursday at TSC  on the DU campus, and every Friday, they go on field trips. “We go to places near Dhaka, so we can come back in daytime. We usually start at 7:30 in the morning and so far, I have been to Manikganj, Munshiganj and Jahangirnagar,” said Jamiul Adnan, a member.
Becoming a member is easy. An initial fee of Tk 100 for a form is what it takes, and it is valid till the end of the third year of university life. But, members do have to participate in trainings and workshops, which can cost up to Tk 2,000 on registration. Based on their participation and dedication, the committee is upgraded every September with members getting promotions.
“I actually joined last year as a new member, after four months of supervision, I became a general member. Currently, I am one of the executives,” said Adnan.
DUPS arranges a basic photography training programme annually. For example, last year, it held a three-month long training, which was open to all. Classes were held once a week at different venues around Dhaka University, namely TSC Munir Chowdhury conference room, TSC cafeteria, DAKSU cafeteria and Science cafeteria. Participants had the opportunity to exhibit their photographs at the TSC, with the best three awarded the Mridlkanti Memorial Crest. Certificates were also given after successful completion of the course, which included theoretical and written exams, along with practical assignments.
This year, classes for the 36th   Basic Photography Training Programme will start on January 29. A total of 11 classes will be held, with two outdoor ones. Registration is  going on and will continue until Jan 28.
