Japanese cos shortlisted for Matarbari power project

The construction work of the country’s largest coal-fired power plant in Bangladesh, Matarbari 2X600MW Ultra Super Critical Coal Fired Power Plant, will begin within eight to nine months, according to Managing Director, Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Ltd, Abul Quasem.
Abul Quasem on Thursday told The Independent that Sumitomo Corporation and Marubeni Corporation had been shortlisted to build the plant in Matarbari in the Bay of Bengal, and one of them would be awarded the job. The names of shortlisted entities has been sent to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for concurrence.
The Matarbari plant will have an installed capacity of 1,200MW, with two units producing 600MW each. It will use imported coal to meet the rapidly rising demand for power.
According sources at the Economic Relations Division (ERD), the company will borrow $3.7 billion from JICA at an annual interest rate of 0.1 per cent over the next 30 years, with an initial 10-year grace period.
Earlier, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the Matarbari 2X600MW Ultra Super Critical Coal Fired Power Plant project, among the largest in the country's power sector, involving Taka 35,984.46 crore and aimed at boosting power generation significantly.
Ultra Super Critical Technology will be used at the Matarbari project, with a work efficiency of 42 per cent, which is higher than the average work efficiency of other coal-based power plants (34 per cent) in Bangladesh. The work efficiency of the power plants in the USA is 36 per cent.
In February 2014, a newspaper report described the approximately $4 billion price-tag of the Matarbari project as "staggering". The paper reported that a feasibility study had been conducted for the project by JICA and Tokyo Electric Power (TEPC). Under the project, there would be two coal-based power plants, each having power generation capacity of 600 Megawatt. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by June, 2023. The power plant will possess highest thermal efficiency in the world at 41.3 per cent compared to 36 per cent in the USA, 29 per cent in India, the UK and Germany, 38 per cent in France and 40 per cent in Japan.
