The Independent goes only online for now

The Independent newspaper has decided to stop its print edition from tomorrow (Wednesday) amid the prevailing COVID-19 risks and challenges in newspaper distribution. The newspaper will continue to bring news to its readers through its online version, accessible at www.theindependentbd.com. The newspaper will resume its print edition once the novel coronavirus situation in the country comes under control, said The Independent management. The Independent Editor M Shamsur Rahman, in a facebook post yesterday said, “Due to the prevailing situation stemming from COVID-19, The Independent newspaper has decided to stop its print edition from Wednesday, April 8, 2020.”

“The newspaper had been in circulation for over the past 25 years. But currently our distribution has taken a major blow due to this pandemic. We will be available to our readers on our online platform www.theindependentbd.com. When the situation improves, Inshallah we will return to our regular print edition,” he added, thanking the readers, advertisers and all patrons for the continuous support.

The Independent Executive Editor Shamim Abdullah Zahedy said the newspaper is facing crisis in distribution due to restrictions on movement amidst the deteriorating coronavirus situation. The management is also concerned about the safety of journalists and other staff who need to come to the workplace for publishing the newspaper. Considering the overall situation, the management has decided to go online for the time being, he said.
