Election fever grips Noakhali municipalities

Lobbying for party ticket and mass contact to secure vote by aspirants are going on simultaneously as three municipalities of Noakhali have been gripped by election fever.
Local leaders of different political parties, including the ruling Awami League (AL), have started showdown through meetings and mass contacts. They have set up big banners and posters at the important points in the municipalities, intersections of highways and road, and on boundary walls. There are nine municipalities in Noakhali district.
In Noakhali sadar, the most impotent municipality of Noakhali was established in 1976 and it has now 65,000 voters, according to the district election office.
 The present mayor of this municipality is Harun-ur-Rashid Azad, who is also district BNP general secretary.
The probable candidates in Noakhali municipality are Abdul Wadud  Pintu, Town AL president, Shahidullah Khan Sohel general secretary of Town AL, Shamsuddin Jahan proposed  joint  secretary of district AL,  Fakrul Islam Montu district treasure of AL, Golam Mohiuddin Latu, Rezaul Haque Basher AL leader, Moniruzzaman Selim.
There is no sign of any presence of BNP and Jamaat candidates in the campaign.
However, incumbent mayor and BNP leader Harun-ur-Rashid Azad, pourashaba BNP vice president Shahidul Islam Kiron and Town BNP general secretary Abu Nasar might contest the polls.  
Party insiders say BNP and Juba Dal, Charta Dal leaders feel insecure at the moment. Many of them have gone into hiding. Besides, BNP and AL have been plagued by internal party feud.
 Mayor Harun-ur-Rashid Azad has a fair chance to get reelected as he has taken many development works in the municipality, including the ongoing Tk 20 crore drainage project. He has built modern Maijdee Park and constructed different link roads.
 Harun-ur-Rashid said: “I have been working for the development of the municipality. I believe people will definitely vote for me if there is a fair poll.”
Abdul Wadud  Pintu, president of Town AL is also a candidate this year. He drew huge crowd at a recent public meeting in Maijdee town.
 Samsuddin Jahan of AL might also get nomination as he has wide support among the members of business community.
Maijdee Town AL general secretary Shahidullah Khan is also a likely candidate for mayoral election as he can generate support from the youths.
The Chowmohani municipality, which was formed in 1973, has 45,000 voters.
In support of his poll contention, sitting mayor Akther Hossain Faisal said: ‘I took the responsibility of the municipality as mayor on 22 April last year. I have taken up development projects involving an amount of Tk 70 crores. “The construction work of a modern park is going on in Chowmohani. I have developed different link roads in Chowmohani town and also constructed culverts. I have also made the town free from traffic jam and cleared different canals of encroachment.”  
Present mayor Akther Hossin Faisal is also seeking nomination and others candidate are Globe director also local MP Mamun- ur-Rashid, his elder brother Khalad Saifullah,  Chowmohani town AL general secretary Abu Bakkar Siddique, Chowmohani Municipality AL vice-president Azizul Haque Bashar, district AL leader Sheik Shahidullah and former upazila vice chairman Shanaj Begum are also trying for nominations.
The Chatkhil municipality was established in 1995 and has 21,000 voters. In 2010, upazila AL general secretary Sirajul Islam Chowdhury was elected mayor. But following his death in 2013 Mostafa Kamal of BNP became mayor winning a by-election.
 Mostafa Kamal said he has contributed a lot to the development of the area. He said he has built roads and link roads, culverts, schools and mardrasas and helped the poor. “I hope my party BNP and people have not forgotten my contribution,” he added.
