Police yet to arrest suspended RU BCL activists

Five days have been passed since the assault on a student at Rajshahi University (RU) by two ‘Bangladesh Chhatra League’ (BCL) men, but the police are yet to   arrest them till yesterday. Victim’s family members and friends expressed dissatisfaction concerning the issue.

Meanwhile, the university authorities suspended the two accused BCL men for a temporary basis and they also formed a five-member probe body. RU BCL also asked all leaders and activist to avoid them in their party activities. The victim -- Shohrab Mia, a third-year student of department of Finance and Banking, son of Abdul Hamid hailed from Narsingdi -- was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

The two accused are: Rakibul Islam alias Asif Luck of Islamic Studies department and Humayun Kabir Nahid of Bangla department. They allegedly beat up Shohrab following a dispute over a stolen laptop. A case was filed by Sohrab with Motihar Police Station against Asif and Nahid in connection with the torture. Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Motihar police station said the two key alleged have fled the city. “We are continuing our drives to arrest them with best efforts. Members of the Detective Branch are also assisting us,” he added.
