HC upholds Mir Nasir, son’s jail terms

The High Court yesterday upheld the lower court verdict that had sentenced former minister Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin to 13 years’ imprisonment and his son Barrister Mir Helal Uddin to three years in a corruption case.

The HC bench of Justice AKM Abdul Hakim and Justice Fatema Najib delivered the judgment rejecting the petitions filed by them challenging the lower court verdict.

Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan, a counsel of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), said the court asked Nasir and Helal to surrender before the lower court within three months after receiving the copy of the HC verdict.

Giving reaction to the verdict, Helal said, “It’s fabricated and we’ll file an appeal after surrendering before the lower court.”

The ACC filed the case against former State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Mir Nasir Uddin and his son Mir Helal Uddin with Gulshan Police Station on March 6, 2007 for amassing wealth illegally and concealing information. On July 4, 2007, the Special Judge Court sentenced Nasir to 13 years’ imprisonment and his son Helal to three years.
