Rule over forming independent prosecution service commission

The High Court (HC) yesterday issued a rule asking authorities concerned to explain as to why it shall not pass order to form independent prosecution service commission to make appointment of judicial officers.
A High Court division bench comprising Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman passed the order yesterday after holding hearing on a writ filed in this regard. Advocate Farhad Uddin Ahmed Bhuiyan, who filed and moved the writ before court, said the court asked law secretary, law commission chairman, cabinet secretary and parliament secretariat secretary to submit their explanations within four weeks. Advocate Bhuiyan filed the writ on November 11.

SC upholds Latif Siddiqui’s bail; no bar to release

The Appellate Division yesterday upheld the High Court bail to former minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui in a corruption case and paved the way for his release from jail.
A four-member Appellate Division bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order and rejected the leave to appeal petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). There is no legal bar to Latif Siddiqui to get released from jail following the order, said his lawyer Monsurul Haque Chowdhury.  Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan stood for ACC. Earlier on November 11, the top court stayed a six-month interim bail granted by the High Court on November 4. Another High Court bench had turned down his bail petition on October 1. The former minister sought bail from the court on September 26. A corruption case was filed at Adamdighi Police Station against Siddiqui and one Jahanara Rashid on October 17, 2017. They were accused of incurring a loss of Tk 40.7 lakh to the state.

Arman placed on 6-day remand

A Dhaka court yesterday placed former Dhaka South unit Juba League vice-president Enamul Haque Arman on six-day remand in a case lodged for amassing illegal wealth. Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Qayesh passed the order as investigation officer of the case pleaded to place him on seven-day remand. Deputy Director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Md Salauddin filed the case against Arman on November 12 for amassing illegal wealth of Tk 2.05 crore. RAB on October 6 arrested former Juba League leader Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat and his associate Arman from Kunja Sreepur village under Alkora union in Chauddagram upazila of Cumilla district.

One jailed for gold smuggling

A Chattogram court yesterday sentenced a man to 10 years in jail for smuggling gold three years back. The court of Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sheikh Asfakur Rahman also fined the convict Taka 50,000, in default, to suffer three months more imprisonment. Convict Jamal Uddin is a resident of East Guzara village under Raozan upazila of the district. The prosecution story is in brief that acting on a tip-off, a team of custom department arrested Jamal Uddin at Shah Amanat International Airport, Chattogram on February 22, 2017 along with six pieces gold bar. Then, a case was filed with the Patenga police station.
