2 BCL men suspended
over RU student assault

The Rajshahi University (RU) authorities have suspended two students temporarily for allegedly assaulting a finance department student in a dormitory on the campus on Friday night. The suspended students are Rakibul Islam alias Asif Luck of Islamic Studies and Humayun Kabir Nahid of Bangla department of the university. They are the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), and followers of the university unit BCL President Golam Kibria.

Four students were also detained on Saturday night from Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall in this connection. They are-- Akimul Islam Rifat and Hasanuzzaman of Islamic studies, Asif Hossain and Sujon Ali of public administration department.

The decision has been taken while the students of the university besieged the administration building around 12pm yesterday protesting the incident.  University Proctor Prof Luthfor Rahman announced it while high RU administrative officials were also present. The protesting students withdrew the ongoing strike programme for seven days after getting assurance from authority to suspend them for permanent basis in connection with the incident. Faisal Ahmed Runu, general secretary of RU unit BCL, said they formed a four-member probe body and they also submitted report. They will take proper action after getting the report.

Moreover, over 200 teachers and students of the university formed a human chain programme under the banner of ‘Teacher-Student platform against harassment’ in front of university senate building protesting the incident. Asif Luck and Humayun Kabir Nahid took Shohrab Mia, a third-year student of finance department, to room no. 254 of the hall around 12:30am and beat him up for half an hour.

They are also the residents of Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall. Shohrab’s friends took him to the university medical centre afterwards from where he was referred to RMCH.
