Oikyafront seeks to meet Khaleda at BSMMU

Jatiya Oikyafront, where the BNP is a major partner, yesterday sought permission from the prison authorities to meet ailing BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. The platform forwarded names of five leaders to the prison authorities for the meeting, but the name of its top leader Dr Kamal Hossain was not on the list. The names of five Oikyafront leaders are Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President asm Abdur Rab, JSD Vice-President Tania Rab, convenor of Nagorik Oikya Mahmudur Rahman Manna, founder of Gano Sastha Kendra Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury and general secretary of Ganaforum Dr Reza Kibria.

The Oikyafront yesterday sent a letter to the Inspector General of Prisons (IGP, prisons) seeking permission to meet the former premier who is currently serving jail term and undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medcial University (BSMMU).

The letter signed by Oikyafront Office Secretary Jahangir Alam Mintu was handed over to AIG (prisons) Suraiya Akhter, said sources. The letter mentioned that former premier Khaleda is very ill and the five Oikyafront leaders want to meet her either today (Monday) or tomorrow (Tuesday). Earlier on October 21, an eight-member Oikyafront delegation met Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal at his secretariat office and obtained his consent to meet the BNP chairperson, serving her 17-year jail term in two graft cases.

JSD leader ASM Abdur Rab later told reporters that an Oikyafront delegation led by Dr Kamal Hossain would meet Khaleda. The delegation also provided a list of nine Oikyafront leaders including Dr Kamal Hossain to meet the former premier.

When contacted, Ganaforum Executive President Advocate Subrata Chowdhury said that during the meeting with the home minister they gave a list of nine Oikyafront leaders including Dr Kamal Hossain. “We did not bring any change to the list. It is possible that a smaller list has been sent to the jail authorities. Dr Kamal may meet Khaleda later,” he added.
