At least seven people including a child and a government primary schoolteacher were killed and 15 others injured in a suspected gas pipeline explosion in a house in Patharghata area of Chattogram yesterday. The deceased were identified as Abdus Sukkur, 50, a rickshaw-puller; Md Selim, 40, a van-puller hailing from Cox’s Bazar’s Moheshkhali upazila; Annie Barua, former headmistress of Meher Ati Government Primary School in Patiya; Nurul Islam, 30, a painter and son of Abdul Hamid of Kutuber Kheel area in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar; Julekha Khanom Farjana, 30, wife of Ataur Rahman hailing from Moulvir Dokan area in Satkania and her son Atikur Rahman Shuvo, 7.

However, Petrobangla denied the claim saying that the explosion was caused by the gas trapped in the septic tank of the house not by the gas pipe line.

While talking to The Independent, Kamruzzaman, Director, Operation, Petrobangla, said their primary investigation reveals that the gas line, which is placed deeper level into the earth, remains intact. But this is not final we need further probe into the matter for final report, he added. BSS adds: The gas pipeline is presumed to have exploded on ground floor of a building in front of 5-storey Barua Building in Patharghata Brick Field Road area around 8:50am, said OC Mohsin of Kotwali Police Station.

The blast blew the walls of the building off, killing seven people on the spot and injuring another 15, the police official quoted eyewitness as saying. The injured persons were whisked off to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital, he added.

The effect of the explosion also caused damage to a nearby building gate, a portion of wall of Barua building and a stationary microbus in its garage, eyewitness said.

After being information, police and firefighters rushed to the scene to carry out the rescue operation.
