Khaleda moves before SC seeking bail

BNP chief Khaleda Zia yesterday moved before the Appellate Division (AD) of the Supreme Court challenging a High Court (HC) order that rejected her bail in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case, in which she was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment by a lower court. Barrister Kaiser Kamal filed the petition on behalf of the former prime minister with the related branch of the apex court seeking bail for Khaleda in the case. Advocate Joynul Abedin, one of the counsel for the BNP chief, told reporters that the case was filed against Khaleda out of political motive. There is no evidence of corruption against her in the case, he said.

Abedin also said Khaleda is 74 years old and physically very sick and she is entitled to get bail in the case.

He also said that they would move with the petition before the chamber judge of the AD next week.

On July 31, the HC rejected the BNP chief’s bail petition in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
