Minor boy drowns in Bagerhat

UNB, Bagerhat

A three-year-old boy drowned in a pond of Chakuli village in Fakirhat on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Morsalin Sheikh, son of Motaleb Sheikh of the village.

ANM Khairul Anam, officer-in-charge of Fakirhat Police Station, said the child fell into the pond near their house while playing outside. Later, his floating body was recovered from the pond, he said.

329 bottles of phensedyl seized

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) of Khalishpur bordering area in Jhenidah seized a total of 329 bottles of Indian phensedyl syrup in three separate drives between Friday evening and Saturday early morning.

BGB 58 battalion assistant director Qamrul Hasan said as a part of their anti-drug drives, the border guards seized 24 bottles of the contra banned phensedyl from Sadapara field, 167 bottles from Rajapur Kalabagan area and another 138 bottles from Rangiarpota in Moheshpur upazila.  

But they could not arrest the drug vendors during the drives.

BGB handed over the seized phensedyl to Moheshpur police station filing separate cases, the BGB official said.  

Man awarded death sentence for killing brother-in-law

A court on Thursday sentenced a man to capital punishment for killing his brother-in-law in Mirpur upazila of the district in 2017.

District and Session Judge Arup Kumar Goswami gave the verdict to Lalon Gazi, 35, hailed from Chithlia village in the upazila.

According to the prosecution, carpenter Lalon Gazi killed his brother-in-law Cheni Mollah by a hammer over family feud at Khandorbaria village in the upazila on March 14 in 2017.

Following the murder, Cheni Mollah’s brother Mani Mollah filed a case. Police submitted the charge sheet to the court on August 31, 2017.Testifying witnesses and evidences the court passed the order.
