Country’s first aviation univ to come up in Lalmonirhat

The country’s first aerospace university will come up at Lalmonirhat. The proposed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahaman Civil Aviation and Aerospace University will be set up in the city’s airport area.

Yesterday, Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed, Lalmonirhat MP GM Kader and Chief of Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) Air Marshal Mashihuzzaman Serniabat visited the proposed site for the new university.

Later, the minister told the media that the aerospace university will comprise seven faculties, 37 subjects and four institutes.

“Reopening of the airport has been a long standing demand of the people of Kurigram and Lalmonirhat. It will start flight operations very soon,” he added.

A few months ago, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had announced that flight maintenance and an overhauling industry will be setup in the Lalmonirhat airport area.

Considering the economic vulnerability of the north region, the government has decided to build a specialized university for overall development of this area.

The government has appointed a vice chancellor (VC), pro VC and treasurer for the university. It will formally start its first session from January 2020. Initially, the university will start academic activities in Dhaka temporarily. It will be shifted to Lalmonirhat after completion of the main campus, sources said.

Notably, the Lalmonirhat airport was built during the Second World War in 1943. It was, however, abandoned after the war.
