Fresh membership drive stars July 21

AL eyes 2 crore new faces

Awami League (AL) is again going to launch a membership drive from July 21 with a target of inducting two crore new faces into the organisation to strengthen it. The party had launched its membership drive across the country just a year ago. But it did not make any significant progress and hence the fresh move this month, according to AL insiders. They said the membership drive last year was not successful because of the indifferent attitude of the party's district leaders.

The party high-ups have directed the central leaders and district heads to go from door to door across the country to recruit fresh members. On May 20, 2018, the party president and Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, had kicked off the membership drive at an extended meeting at her official residence, by renewing her membership by paying the subscription fee of Tk. 500.

The AL general secretary, Obaidul Quader, said: “We'll infuse fresh blood into the party ranks. We'll definitely consider those who worked hard for the general election. But we're yet to take any decision on accepting members of other political parties.”

He said no member of families of war criminals will be inducted.

The party general secretary also said the main target of the membership drive is to woo new voters, especially women.

He also said that instructions to the grassroots level leaders were to recruit honourable persons like school teachers, imams of mosques and those who chanted slogans in favour of Nouka in the last December 30 general election.

When contacted, AL joint general secretary Abdur Rahman said: “We will be launching a membership drive again, in continuation of the one last year. Our main objective is to increase the number of members to strengthen the party.”

Replying to a query, Rahman said: “We couldn’t achieve the target of recruiting two crore members last year. But I hope this time we can.”

AL office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, said he does not know the actual number of fresh members. “All I can say is that we have sold around 30 lakh membership forms so far,” he added.

According to the AL party constitution, membership should be renewed every three years by paying the subscription fee. An existing party member can renew his/her membership by paying the subscription fee of Tk. 20.

When contacted, Dhaka South city unit AL general secretary, Shahe Alam Murad, told The Independent yesterday that they will recruit members as per instructions of party high-ups.

“We will start recruiting new members from July 21. Our party general secretary will launch the drive in the city. We were busy with  organisational work and the general election last year. But this time, we can pay full attention to get new members. I hope we will be able to meet our target to induct over 20 lakh new members from the capital,” he said.

According to the party’s Dhanmondi political office, the party has a target to recruit two crore members from across the country this time.
