A BNP standing committee member has accused the government of delaying BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s release on bail by creating obstacles. BNP standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said ministers insisted that they were not interfering in Khaleda Zia’s release on bail.

“But the fact is, obstacles are being created,” he observed. Speaking at a protest rally held in front of Jatiya Press Club, the BNP leader said that the government's denial only proved that the Awami League was stalling Khaleda Zia’s release.

Khaleda’s release is being delayed due to the government’s interference in judicial matters, he asserted. Nagorik Odhiker Andolon Forum organised the rally, demanding the release of the former premier. Adviser Syed Ahmed Aslam presided over the event. Mahmud Chowdhury also alleged that the government was interfering in every sphere of life.

Civil society members are keeping mum as they are being made victims of enforced disappearance and implicated in false cases, he claimed. BNP joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokan, Abu Naser Mohammed Rahmatullah, Sabira Nazmul and Nipun Chandra Roy Chowdhury, among others, also spoke on the occasion.

The Jatiyatabadi Swecchasebak Dal yesterday brought out a procession in the city, demanding the release of  ailing BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is serving a 17-year term in two graft cases. BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi led the procession, which started from the party central office at Naya Paltan after the Juma prayer.

Speaking at a post-procession rally at the party office, Rizvi Ahmed alleged that the government was unjust in keeping Khaleda Zia in prison. She is not being given bail because of the government’s instructions, he added.

He demanded immediate release of the BNP chairperson. Secchasebok Dal president Shafiul Bari Babu, general secretary Abdul Kadir Bhuiyan Jewel, Yeasin Ali and Saiful Islam Firoz, among others, took part in the procession.
