Man killed in city road crash

UNB, Dhaka

A man was killed and three others were injured when a bus hit an auto-rickshaw at Mohammadpur Beribadh early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Tofazzal Hossain, 60, an auto-rickshaw driver from Batenbari village of Bhola's Borhanuddin upazila. Bacchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, said the accident took place around 4:30am when a bus rammed the auto-rickshaw heading towards Dhanmondi. The driver and three passengers were injured in the accident. Later, they were taken to a local hospital where doctors pronounced Tofazzal dead around 6am.

Journalist arrested in money laundering case

UNB, Khulna

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Khulna Press Club's former vice-president Mizanur Rahman Milton in a money laundering case on Monday. Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Narail's Kalia Police Station, said CID picked up Mizanur and three others from a hotel in Khulna city around 2pm and handed him over around 7pm. He was later produced before a court and sent to prison.

CID Inspector Anup filed a money laundering case against 16 people, including Mizanur, with Kalia police. Four people, including the journalist, have been arrested in the case so far. Journalists from Khulna Press Club, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalist and Metropolitan Journalist Union condemned the arrest and demanded his immediate release.

4 held with 1,400 yaba tablets

BSS, Naraynaganj

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), in an anti-crime operation, arrested four alleged drug-peddlers with 1,400 yaba tablets from Boktar Kandi area of the district yesterday. The arrested were identified as Md Jasim, 27, Md Abir Hosen, 30, Shoshen Sutradhar Munna, 38, and Mohammad Hossain, 27. All of them are residents of Nabiganj and Kanchpur areas.

 “On a tip-off, the crime prevention special company of RAB-11 conducted a raid in Boktar Kandi area under Bandar Police Station and nabbed them with the contraband drugs and Taka 10,000 cash,” Company Commander of RAB-11 Major Talukdar Najmus Sakib told BSS. During the interrogation, they admitted their involvement in illegal drug peddling for long time, he added. The Bandar Thana Police is preparing to file a case in this regard.

‘Govt to buy rescue equipment to tackle climate change’

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Enamur Rahman yesterday said the government is planning to buy rescue equipments worth about several 100 crores as a measure for disaster management.

 “Bangladesh currently is well ahead of many countries in the area of disaster management… That’s why the country is considered a role model in managing natural disasters,” he said while exchanging views with Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders of Dhamrai upazila in Talbagh area of Savar.

The state minister said a disaster management training academy will be established in Dhaka aiming to strengthen the activities of disaster management and relief ministry. Keeping in mind about the academy, the government is planning to buy the rescue equipments, he added. Local BCL leaders were present at the meeting.
