Feni arson and murder
Burqa of Nusrat’s attacker recovered

Burqa of Nusrat’s attacker

Police yesterday recovered a burqa (veil) used by one of the five attackers of Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a madrasa student who died of critical burn injuries after an arson attack. The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) recovered it from a ditch behind the Sonagazi Government College. “The burqa was recovered from a canal on the basis of a statement given by one of Nusrat's classmates, Zubair Ahmed, during interrogation,” said Inspector Shah Alam of the PBI, who is also in charge of the probe.

“Wearing this burqa, Zubair set Nusrat ablaze. Later, when he came out of the madrasa, he left the burqa here,” said the official. "Before that, on Friday afternoon, another suspect Kamrun Nahar Moni revealed that she purchased a burqa from a shop in Manik Mia Plaza in Sonagazi municipality,” said the police official. The PBI has now recovered one of the three burqas worn by the male attackers in the incident, he added.

According to statements by two other suspects, Nur Uddin and Shahadat Hossain, five persons, including themselves, who were clad in burqas, took part in the April 6 attack, when Nusrat was set on fire by pouring kerosene on her.

On Friday, Muhammad Iqbal, special superintendent of the PBI and also an investigator, took one of the female suspects in the murder case, Kamrun Nahar Moni, to visit the crime scene and a local shop from where the burqas were purchased.

Again, the police produced Ruhul Amin, the president of the upazila Awami League (AL), who was arrested on Friday, before a Feni court and sought remand. The court granted five-day remand of Ruhul Amin following the appeal.

Meanwhile, the authorities have annulled the governing committee of Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa over the murder.

The 12-member governing body of the madrasa was formed in September last year. The body includes four guardian members, three teacher representatives, the upazila secondary education officer, an educator, a donor member, the principal as the member secretary and the additional district magistrate as president.

On April 6, Nusrat, an Alim examinee, was set ablaze on the roof of the madrasa by alleged supporters of Sirajuddaula, the principal of the madrasa, after she refused to withdraw a case she filed against him on March 27 over sexual harassment. The 18-year-old, with 80 per cent burns on her body, died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on April 10, after battling death for five days.

UNB adds: Two more persons, suspected of being involved in the murder of madras student Nusrat Jahan Rafi, were arrested yesterday.

The arrestees - Iftekhar Hossain Rana and Emran Hossain Mamun - are residents of Chargonesh in Sonagazi upazila. "They were planners of Nusrat's murder," said Sub-Inspector Md Shah Alam of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). Rana was arrested in Rangamati and Mamun in Cumilla. The PBI has so far arrested 20 people in connection with the murder. Four key suspects—Nur Uddin, Shahadat Hossain Shamim, Abdur Rahin Sharif and Hafez Abdul Quader—have confessed to carrying out the arson attack at the behest of Siraj.
