Man murdered by ‘wife’ in Ctg

UNB, Chattogram

A man was murdered allegedly by his wife at Dewanpur village in Mirsharai Upazila yesterday over family feud. The deceased was identified as Sonatan Mazumder Prokash Sanak, 45, son of Bhabranjan. Md Iftekhar Uddin, officer-in-charge of Jorarganj Police Station, said Sonaton’s wife Luky Mazumder hit him on his head with a piece of wood and slaughtered him with a sharp weapon around 1am. On information, police recovered the body in the morning and arrested Luky.

KOICA delegation meets UGC Chairman


A-two member delegation from Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) called on Professor Abdul Mannan, chairman, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh yesterday, says a press release. Professor Kyoung Yul Bay, Sangmyung University (SMU) Korea led the delegation. Dr Bay informed Professor Mannan that KOICA wants to design a project worth around $ 7.5 million for the empowerment of young women from poor families. The project will also focus on young entrepreneurs in Bangladesh. Bay sought cooperation from UGC so that selected universities can provide students, space, equipments and training facilities to them. Professors Dr Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Dr Dil Afroza Begum, Dr Md Akhtar Hossain, members, UGC; Dr Md. Khaled, Secretary, Md. Shahin Siraj, Deputy Secretary, UGC, among others, were present.

14 drug ‘peddlers’, 27 others held

UNB, Khulna

 Police in separate drives arrested 41 people, including 14 drug peddlers, from different areas of the city from Monday morning to Tuesday morning. Additional Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Moniruzzaman of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) said police arrested them along with 155 Yaba pills and 125 gram hemp.

NGO role sought for urban uplift

The non-governmental organisations (NGOs) could play vital role in accelerating development in various sectors of urban areas to improve standard of living of the backward slum communities. Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa said this at a views-sharing meeting arranged with representatives of different NGOs working for urban uplifts at conference room of Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) here on Monday afternoon. Presided over by Secretary of RpCC Abu Saleh Md Musa Jongi, executives of different NGOs involved in implementing development programmes in the city attended the event and discussed their various projects and future thoughts for urban uplifts.

Gazipur AL leader Momin Uddin passes away

Veteran freedom fighter and an adviser of Gazipur district unit of Awami League (AL) Momin Uddin died of a cardiac arrest yesterday. He was 70. Momin Uddin is survived by wife, a son, a daughter and a host of relatives and admirers. He will be buried at his family graveyard after Asr prayers at Sreepur in Gazipur today after his two namaz-e-janazas at Rajbari ground and Bhatipara village respectively in the district.
