Poll-time govt in 20 days: Muhith

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith  yesterday said that the country is going to have its election-time (interim) government in 20 days, but the BNP will have no scope for inclusion as it has no representation in parliament.

Similarly, no civil society members will find a place in it, said the finance minister. He made this disclosure to journalists at his Secretariat office when the newly-elected mayor and councillors of the Sylhet City Corporation called on him yesterday.

The date and schedule for the polls will be set by the Election Commission (EC).

“I have heard that the Election Commission plans to hold the polls on December  27 as per its plans,” the finance minister said.

The interim government will be formed as per the model prepared by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who will head the interim government with a limited number of ministers, he added.

Answering to a question by journalists, the finance minister said: “I have seen in newspaper reports that civil society society memvers are likely to be in the interim government. But they cannot be included because they do not have any representation in the House. The same holds for the BNP.”

The inclusion of civil society representatives in the poll-time administration would amount to a violation of the law, he added.

BNP and its allies boycotted the last national polls held on January 5, 2014. Candidates of the Awami League-led alliance were elected unopposed in 153 constituencies in the much controversial elections.
