AL govt prioritises sports: PM

Terming her government as ‘sports-friendly’, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that they have given top priority on sports and attempts to develop the infrastructure across the country. The Prime Minister announced the opening of the first-ever Bangladesh Youth Games programme, yesterday at Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital. “While Bangladesh Awami League formed the government, we gave top priority on sports. We’ve erected sports infrastructure from the village to city, created opportunities for the improved practice facilities by building stadium and infrastructure at upazila level,” said the premier during her speech.

“The renovation and development of the stadiums, swimming pools, gymnasiums and sports complex at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla Stadium, Narayanganj’s Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, Khulna’s Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium, Chittagong’s Zahur Ahmed Stadium are done. Besides, some more stadiums including Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium in Cox’s Bazar have newly been built up across the country,” Hasina told.

She also praised the successes of women’s football in 2017.  Commonwealth gold-medal winning shooter Asif Hossain Khan torched the light of the Games after rounding the stadium.

BYG Mascot “Tajorshee” marched past while a musical show was arranged later to enthrall the audience.

The programme began with the National Anthem and ended with a striking 10-minute firework that also arrested attention of the audience in the last part of the event.  

The proceeding of the AV display of the divisional athletes opened with Barisal Division while participants from Chitagong Dhaka, Khulna, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Sylhet Division also took part there.

Finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith delivered his speech as special guest. Minister for sports Biren Sikder and BOA secretary general Syed Shahed Reza among others were also present.  

BOA president and chief of Army staff general Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq handed crests to Prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Finance Minister AMA Muhith.
