IEB to build 16-storey tower

The Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) is going to build a 16-storey modern building 'Tower Bhaban' with a convention centre and seminar in the capital's Ramna area, reports UNB.

"Demolishing all old establishments, including the auditorium adjacent to the IEB, the new building will be built there adjusting to Suhrawardy Udyan and Ramna Park," said a press release issued yesterday. The information was announced at a prize distribution ceremony of a competition on the design of the proposed building at IEB on Tuesday.

Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain distributed the prizes and certificates among the winners as the chief guest.

"There is no big convention centre in Dhaka city except Bangabandhu International Conference Centre. Keeping in mind that there is a need for an international standard convention center, a project has been undertaken involving Tk 250 crore under the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina," the minister said while addressing the event.

With a view to creating a cultural and heritage hub with Ramna and Suhrawardy Udyan, where Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave the 7 March Speech and Pakistani occupation forces surrendered to the alliance forces on December 16, 1971, the initiative is being taken, the minister said adding that the beautification of Ramna Park is also being amplified. A total of 45 designs were exhibited in the competition. Of them, eight were finally selected by a jury board for the 'Tower Bhaban'.
