‘Rash mela’ begins at Kuakata

The traditional ‘Rash Mela’, one of the main festivals of Hindu community, began at Kuakata tourist resort in Patuakhali yesterday morning.
A large number of devotees have thronged the tourist spot to enjoy the festival, the most ancient and traditional of all fairs where members of Hindu community take bath in sea with a belief to wash away all sins.
Patuakhali district administration and law enforcing agencies have setup close circuit camera and have taken security measures for peaceful celebration.
Kuakata Rash Mela arrangement committee president Bipul Howlder said Radha-Krishna idols have been set up to celebrate Rash festival at Kuakata tourist resort. He said the devotees believe that the sea bath would wipe out all their sins. People, irrespective of faith, join the biggest celebration in the area. The festival is also celebrated at Dubler Char in the Sundarbans at the same time.
Religious discussion, recitation from holy books, rendering of religious songs and performance of Aarti are some of the highlights of the programme.
Kuakata hotel-motel owners’ association secretary Md Motaleb Sharif said: “All hotels, and motels have been well-decorated to attract the tourists. A large number of people are staying at Kuakata now. Kuakata has now turned into a busy tourist resort, he added.  
Kalapara upazila Nirbahi Officer and Kuakata municipality administrator Md Zahangir Hossain said local administration has taken all security arrangement
with deployment of addition security forces to ensure peaceful celebration of the mela.
