OUR CORRESPONDENT, Rajshahi

Students and teachers of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute boycotted classes and examinations yesterday to protest against the pushing of their principal into a pond on the campus allegedly by Chhatra League activists. They also staged a demonstration on the Rajshahi-Naogaon Highway to press for their six-point charter of demands, including the punishment of those involved in the incident. Meanwhile, five students, out of 25 who were detained from campus yesterday soon after the incident, have been shown arrested in a case filed by Farid Uddin with Chandrima Police Station, said Golam Mostafa, Officer-in-Charge of the Police Station. “The all arrestees are involved with Chhatra League”, he added.

The students took to the street around 10:00am and formed a human chain in participation of the teachers and officials of the institute. Their other demands are – cancellation of the studentship of the accused BCL men responsible for the incident, establishment of student politics-free campus, restriction on outsiders to enter in the campus, ensure safety of all students, teachers and officials of the institute and ensuring congenial atmosphere on the campus.

The Technical Education Directorate formed a three-member investigation committee led by Joint Secretary and Director of PIW of Technical Education Directorate SM Ferdous Alam. The committee has been asked to submit the probe report within three days. The other members of the committee are Nurul Islam, director of curicullam of the technical education directorate and Omor Faruk, acting principal of Rajshahi Women Polytechnic. On Saturday noon, a group of BCL activists threw the principal of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute Engineer Farid Uddin Ahmed into a pond on the campus for not allowing two of them to take part in examinations as they had lower class attendance.
