The Election Commission (EC) is making preparations to hold elections to the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) in January next year. EC senior secretary Md Alamgir said this while talking to reporters at his office yesterday. “The elections to the two city corporations in Dhaka are likely to be held in mid-January or at the end of January next year. The elections to the DNCC will become due from November 15 and DSCC from November 18,” he said. Asked about the schedule of the elections, Alamgir said the EC would announce the schedule on any day after November 19. The elections would be held on the basis of the current voter list.
The EC secretary also said the commission would use electronic voting machines (EVMs) at all the polling centres of the two city corporations. Asked about any legal complications in holding the polls, Alamgir said: “As of now, we don’t see any such thing.” He also said they decided to hold the polls as the local government ministry had given them the green signal. In reply to a query regarding the holding of the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) polls, the EC secretary said: “The
commission has not taken any decision yet. But the elections to the CCC will be held in March or later with new voter lists.”
The voter lists are expected to be ready by January.
The CCC elections will become due from February and hence they could be held in March or later. The term of office of the CCC will end in July 2020. The schedule of the CCC elections would be determined in the light of secondary school certificate (SSC) exams in February and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams in April. The last elections to the DNCC, DSCC, and CCC were held on April 28, 2015.
As per the local government (city corporation) law, the elections should be held 180 days prior to the end of the tenure of the completion of five years. The first meeting of the CCC was held on August 6, 2015. On the other hand, the first meeting of the DNCC was held on May 14 and that of the DSCC on May 17. As a result, the tenure of the CCC will end on July 2020. The tenure of the DNCC will end on May 13, 2020 and that of the DSCC on May 16, 2020. Before making this disclosure to journalists, the EC held a meeting, with chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda in the chair.
