Cultivation of BINA-7 paddy gains popularity

Our correspondent, Noakhali

Cultivation of the short-duration paddy variety BINA-7 is gaining popularity here. A pilot project, taken up by the Sadar upazila agricultural department, has made the newly innovated paddy variety popular among farmers of Sadar and Subarnchar upazilas. Sources in the Department of Agricultural Extension said 10 acres of land had been brought under the cultivation of BINA-7, a zinc–enriched paddy variety, which mitigates zinc and protein deficiency besides fighting several diseases among children. The Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) is supplying the seeds across the country. BRRI breeders  have developed this high-zinc variety of rice with support from Harvest Plus.

Principal scientific officer of BRRI (Noakhali), Dr Mohiuddin, said: “We have cultivated BINA-7 on 10,000 hectares of land in Sadar and Subarnchar upazilas. It will play a significant role in the prevention of diseases.”

He also said this paddy variety was the world’s first-ever rice class developed in a bio-fortified system. This short-duration rice variety could be harvested 100 days after plantation. It can yield up to 4.5–6 tonnes of paddy per hectare.

Mohiuddin further said farmers who cultivated this paddy variety have got a good yield this season. The market price of the crop is also good, he added.

The International Centre for Tropical Agricultural and International Food Policy Research Institute and BRRI are jointly implementing the project of producing BINA-7. The early harvesting time of this variety of paddy would leave enough time to cultivate various rabi crops such as Brijnal, tomato, mustard, and other vegetables for additional income.
