20 fishermen jailed for netting hilsa violating ban

A total of 20 fishermen were sentenced to jail yesterday for catching hilsa from Kalabadar, Kirtankhola and Arial Khan Rivers under Barishal district defying a 22-day ban that was imposed from October 9.

Bimal Chandra Das, district fishery officer (Hilsa), said directorate of fisheries with the help of river police and coastguard detained the 20 fishermen and seized 50, 000 metres of current net, 35 kg hilsa from Friday night to Sunday early morning.

Later, they were placed before the mobile court, led by executive magistrate Moshref Hosen, and the court jailed each of fishermen to one month imprisonment for violating the fishing ban, he added.

On other hand, 102 fishermen were jailed, 124 were fined and 109 cases lodged, 13lakh metres of current nets, 300-kg hilsa, 5 fishing trawlers and 2 boats were seized and Tk 3.5 lakh was realized as fine by operating 69 mobile courts under 211 drives by fishery department, upazila administration, law enforcers from October 9 to 13, said Azizul Haque, senior assistant director of divisional fishery department.

The drives to save mother hilsa would be continued for increasing hilsa resources in the country, he added.
