Unplanned master plan protested at JU

A group of teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday protested the unplanned master plan under the mega project for the further development of the university worth of Tk 1445 crore.

Under the banner of ‘Teacher-Student Unity Platform’, leftist teachers and students made the protest at a press conference that was held at the common room of Teacher-Student Centre of the university yesterday evening.

They urged to the university authorities to review the master plan after discussing different stakeholders of the university and told to stop the construction of three multistoried dormitories near the Bishwa Kabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall concerning the biodiversity.

Besides, they announced weeklong protest programme including demonstration, light procession and raising public awareness.

Professor Anwarullah Bhuiyan of Philosophy Department said, “We aren’t against the development of the university. But we also demand the conservation of the biodiversity. There had a lot of chance of reviewing the master plan.”

Associate Professor Raihan Rayne of Philosophy department said, “The biodiversity and the ecosystem will have to be considered for making a master plan. But we have no reflection of such matter in our current master plan. So, university authorities must have to revise the master plan.”

Secretary of the JU Cultural Alliance Shahidul Islam Pappu read out a written statement at press meet.

Professor Shamima Sultana, Professor Tarek Reza of Bangla department, President of Jahangirnagar Cultural Alliance Ashikur Rahman. Convenor of “Sadharon Chatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parisad” Shakiluzzaman, Joint convenor Joynal Abedin Shishir delivered speech at press meet.

Mentionable, on Friday, university authorities cut down trees near Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall for the construction of three dormitories on the campus where left leaning students and teachers rushed to the spot and forced to stop the work.
