ACCUSATION OF SERVING “TERRORISTS”

Erdogan accuses dismissed pro-Kurdish mayors

AFP, Istanbul

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday defended his government’s decision to remove three pro-Kurdish mayors from office and accused them of serving “terrorists”, in comments published in the official Anadolu news agency.

The mayors of Diyarbakir, Mardin and Van provinces in eastern Turkey—all members of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) elected in March—were suspended on Monday over alleged ties to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The dismissals sparked protests including in the Kurdish majority Diyarbakir city where police fired water cannons at demonstrators this week.

“Whoever is in hand in hand with terror, we will protect the authority given by the people within the boundaries of law till the very end,” Erdogan was quoted as saying in the capital Ankara. He also said if the mayors “serve the terrorists instead of the people ... we will kick them out.”

In all three cities, government-appointed governors took over the municipal administrations.

Erdogan’s government accuses the HDP party of links to the PKK, which has waged a bloody insurgency against the state since 1984.

Mexican environmentalist stabbed to death

AFP, Tuxtla Gutiérrez

A Mexican biologist was stabbed to death near the nature reserve where she worked in the southern state of Chiapas, authorities said Friday—the second environmentalist murdered there recently.

Greenpeace and other environmental groups condemned the killing of researcher Nora Lopez, 43, who headed a parrot protection program in the Aluxes Eco-Park, a private nature reserve outside the city of Palenque.

It is the same area where Jose Luis Alvarez Flores, an ecologist who worked to protect howler monkeys, was found murdered in June, a killing that also drew international condemnation. According to government figures, 120 environmentalists have been killed in Mexico in the past 15 years, often in apparent retaliation for fighting mining, oil or infrastructure projects. “We demand the authorities make the murder of women and environmental activists in our country a national priority,” Greenpeace and several other environmental groups said in a statement.

First death linked to vaping reported in Illinois

BBC, London

A patient has died after developing a severe respiratory disease due to vaping in the first such death in the US, say health officials.

It comes as experts investigate a mystery lung disease across the US that is linked to use of e-cigarettes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said there were 193 “potential cases” in 22 US states.

Many of the cases involve vaping THC, the main active compound in cannabis, CDC experts said.

The cases were reported over the course of two months between 28 June and 20 August. The person who died was “hospitalized with unexplained illness after reported vaping or e-cigarette use”, Dr Jennifer Layden, the chief medical officer and state epidemiologist in Illinois, said. CDC director Robert Redfield said: “We are saddened to hear of the first death related to the outbreak of severe lung disease in those who use e-cigarette or ‘vaping’ devices.”
